The Benefits of Labyrinths in Addiction Recovery

Labyrinth

A labyrinth is a single path for personal or psychological transformation. Labyrinths have been used for thousands of years across the globe. They do not belong to any religion, culture or denomination. In the United States, the therapeutic use of labyrinths has exploded over the last 15 years. At Promises Austin, we are proud to offer our clients this richly rewarding and healing experience right here on our property.

The Benefits of Labyrinths in Addiction Recovery

Labyrinths are thought to enhance right-brain activity. Walking through the labyrinth is a relaxing, oftentimes spiritual experience, which enables our clients to explore inner parts of themselves and practice a new form of centering.

In life, there are many twists and turns. Knowing which way to go is often puzzling or avoided at all costs by those trying to recover from addiction. Many clients who come to Promises Austin have lost the ability to venture forth on unknown paths, or they’ve closed themselves off so completely that they are merely sleepwalking through life. They don’t trust their natural instincts or their judgment.

A labyrinth, unlike a maze you can get lost in, provides one continuous circuitous path that leads to the center. You walk into the labyrinth along the spiral path, and then back out again on the same path. At all times, you can see the center of the labyrinth, so you don’t have to worry about where you are and can concentrate instead on mindful walking or on meditation or prayer.

The twists and turns you experience during the labyrinth are a metaphor for life and its challenges. The use of labyrinths in addiction treatment helps calm the mind, sooth the soul, mend the heart and bring peace to a troubled situation.

A Complement to Traditional Addiction Treatment

The experiential and multisensory labyrinth activity complements and enhances traditional talk therapy. Labyrinth therapy has proven especially effective for those suffering from substance abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sexual abuse, and those working through grief and loss.

The labyrinth at Promises Austin is one more way we create an environment where our clients can make use of creative counseling techniques and experience a safe environment conducive to their healing and transformation.
