Art for Health’s Sake

Her story, chronicled in a report on the website stltoday.com, tells of someone who lost her way due to alcohol and drug dependence, but who managed to recover when treatment put her in touch with her “inner artist.” Here are highlights of her experience:

“I used to stay high all the time,” she said. “I wasn’t really living life … I can feel my emotions now.”

On Feb. 1, 2010 Grace entered Preferred Family Healthcare’s substance abuse treatment program, receiving outpatient therapy twice weekly at the mental health service provider’s St. Charles, Mo., office. Her treatment included a therapeutic creative arts program called ARTC – Achieving Recovery through Creativity.

ARTC was created to give high-risk youth a healthy outlet for their emotions, said program director Kasey Harlin. “We use art as a tool for personal change,” Harlin said. “It helps them express themselves, feel a sense of accomplishment, and engage in positive activities instead of the self-destructive coping skills they have acquired over the years.”

At the treatment facility, Grace was allowed to grow as an artist. In the meantime, she, likewise, grew as a person in recovery, eventually replacing her harmful habits with a sober, productive life.

At Promises Austin, we serve both men and women guests over 26 years of age. And while the core element in our 35-day addiction recovery program is the Twelve Step Program model, the Promises Austin program expands this core to integrate the physical, mental, emotional, family, and spiritual health needs and related treatment plans for each individual.

One of the most important facets in the process is our Expressive Arts Therapy program. As was the case in Grace’s treatment, this modern and growing approach to recovery focuses on guests expressing their complex and ever-changing emotions in a non-verbal way–-through art.

Guided by an experienced artist and counselor, clients of Promises Austin are encouraged to use colors, symbols, and imagery to freely express themselves, using various media. This form of therapy has been found to stimulate healing on a level that traditional therapies may not achieve.

The program, which requires no previous artistic ability or expectations, encourages clients to explore themselves and resolve inner conflicts that, otherwise, could have been hidden from more clinical styles of therapy. It’s a therapeutic outlet of free expression and communication.

And it very often produces beautiful works of art, both literally and metaphorically.
