Fun Sober Activities

One of the greatest challenges to getting sober is re-discovering your identity outside of drinking. Before you began rehab, going to the bars, hanging out at parties, drinking during the game, or unwinding with a glass of wine may have been your normal routine. One of the ways to disassociate with alcohol is to engage in fun sober activities. These are activities that you may have avoided in the past because they did not include drinking. Furthermore, you may have perceived them as being boring or ‘uncool.’ What you may quickly find, however, is that your world of possibilities opens up when you are not tied down to alcohol. Let’s look at some fun sober activities that may pique your interest once you give them a chance.

Exercise & Fitness

The last thing an alcoholic wants to engage in is exercise & fitness. However, a person in recovery often craves physical activity and wants to get in shape. The exercise fulfills a lot of physical, emotional, and mental needs that alcohol used to provide. The difference is that you will feel better after hitting the gym than you will if you have a bender. Exercise improves health, reduces anxiety & depression, and boosts your motivation to stop drinking. You can exercise alone or find a fitness partner. You also have lots of indoor and outdoor options to choose from. If you don’t know what other fun sober activities you want to do, exercise is a great starting point.

Fun Sober Activities: Starting New Hobbies

Hobbies make life more interesting. They also keep you from being idle – something you don’t need during recovery. Hobbies relieve stress, give you a sense of fulfillment, provide a social outlet, give you a challenge, and boost your confidence. They are also good for your physical health and keep you from getting burned out in other areas of your life. If you don’t know where to start (chances are you haven’t had a hobby in years), then start by making a list of things you like to do or find interesting. Next, find an event or activity in your community that you may enjoy. You can figure it out from there. The most important thing about hobbies is that you have to schedule a time for them. Try to work them into your daily or weekly schedule.

Travel

When was the last time you’ve been on vacation or took a weekend trip to a local destination? Getting away can help recalibrate your mental and emotional state. Get together with your family or some friends, and plan a trip. Having someone with you on the road can keep you accountable. When planning a trip, make sure you enjoy it. Trips are not designed to be stressful. So, simplify your plans, work within your budget, and give yourself time to breathe and relax. Also, plan fun sober activities that replace the bars, clubs, and hotel parties.
